Guitar Guide
At LPSM, we teach classical guitar. The nylon strings on a classical guitar are gentler on the fingers and allow students to develop proper technique.
Guitars come in a range of different sizes with the most popular being 1/2, 3/4 and full size, what size you should be playing on is based on the student’s physical size, typically height - not age or ability. Using the correct size makes a big difference in comfort, hand positioning and long-term progress.

*Please note guides are standardised and not always 100% accurate for each individual. Your teacher will also check the guitar size during your lesson and advise whether it is suitable for the student or whether they would benefit from moving up or down a size.
Recommended Guitar Brands and Models
When recommending instruments we are always looking for a sweet spot between an affordable guitar that is good quality. A low quality guitar can be difficult to tune and harder to play, which can slow learning and reduce motivation.

Case/Gigbag - Keeping your guitar in a case/gigbag helps to protect it and keep it in tune for longer

Foot Rest - Needed support your leg when propping the guitar to allow for the correct position and posture

Music Stand - All students should have a music stand at home to ensure ideal set up when practicing

Strings - Strings frequently snap on guitars (especially beginners) so having a set or two on hand in your case is very important

Metronome - On Teacher Recommendation: A metronome is used by more advanced students when practicing scales and playing speeds
Music Books and Music Bags can be purchased from the Leeson Park School of Music office. Your Teacher will recommend what books you need during your lesson.
