Cello Guide
Cellos are available in six sizes (1/10, 1/8,1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full size). What size you should be playing based on the physical size of the student - their arm length, hand size and overall body size - not their age or ability.
Playing on the correct size instrument is crucial. An instrument that is too large can lead to tension and poor posture, while one that is too small can limit proper technique. Starting with the right size helps students develop good habits from the beginning.
Size Guide:

-
Have the player extend their left arm completely straight (but not overextended) with no bend in the elbow or wrists.
-
Measurement 1 (neck to wrist) This indicates the most appropriate and comfortable size for the player.
-
Measurement 2 (neck to palm) This indicates the largest size the player could use.

*Please note guides are standardised and not always 100% accurate for each individual. Your teacher will also check the violin size during your lesson and advise whether it is suitable for the student or whether they would benefit from moving up or down a size.
Recommended Cellos
When recommending instruments we are always looking for a sweet spot between an affordable Cello that is good quality. A low quality Cello can be difficult to tune and harder to play, which can slow learning and reduce motivation.
Other brands to consider: Yamaha, Primavera, Stagg

Accessories Needed
-
Case - Keeping your cello in a case helps to protect it and keep it in tune for longer. Most new cellos will come with a case but double check.
-
End Pin Rest - Stop the Cello slipping along (and damaging) the floor for a stable position when playing
-
Rosin - Applied to the bow of the cello in order to create a tension between the bow hair the the the strings for a clear sound
-
Music Stand - All students should have a music stand at home to ensure ideal set up when practicing
-
Strings - Strings can snap on cellos (especially beginners) so having a set on hand in your case is very important
-
Metronome - On Teacher Recommendation: A metronome is used by more advanced students when practicing scales and playing speeds
Music Books and Music Bags can be purchased from the Leeson Park School of Music office. Your Teacher will recommend what books you need during your lesson.
