LPSM Internal Assessments

LPSM’s Internal Assessments provide students with a structured opportunity to demonstrate their progress in a performance setting. These assessments help evaluate students' technical and musical development while also encouraging confidence in performance. Below, you’ll find an overview of how the assessments work, what to expect, and key guidelines for teachers.

Instrumental Performance
Assessments Structure (Year 2+)

The Instrumental Performance Assessments take place in a concert-style format, where students perform in front of an audience of peers playing the same instrument, and parents are invited to attend. This setup provides students with valuable performance experience while ensuring they receive fair and objective feedback.

Each child’s performance is assessed and marked by a different teacher of the same instrument, which allows for an impartial evaluation of their progress. Teachers who are familiar with the assessment process and marking system will be onhand at each assessment concert to guide you with regards to completing the report form and awarding a mark.

Please remember!

Although this is an assessment, please know that if your student is struggling it's okay to help them on the day. They will not be penalised if you assist them if they get stuck.

Students are required to prepare either:

  • Two contrasting short pieces that showcase different aspects of their ability, totaling no more than 3-4 minutes combined.

  • One substantial piece lasting 3-4 minutes.

If a student performs two pieces, their scores will be averaged to determine their final mark. The assessment focuses on technical execution, musicality, and overall performance.

*Students are not required to play repeats within their piece

Student Exemptions

Although every student is strongly encouraged to take part in the instrumental performance assessments, there are specific cases where students are not required to participate. See here

Assessment Reports & Marking Criteria

Each student will receive an assessment sheet that provides structured feedback. The marking criteria is as follows:

Teachers will receive printed assessment sheets on the day of the concert. They should complete them throughout the performances and submit them to the administration team at the end of the concert.

High Achievers Concert

Students who achieve a distinction (21 marks or above) will be invited to perform in our High Achievers’ Concert, a prestigious event that highlights outstanding talent across the school.

This concert will be judged by an external adjudicator. Awards will be given in both junior and senior categories to recognize excellence.

Beginners' Concert

Instead of formal assessments, beginner students will participate in an informal concert. This event is similar to the Christmas Concert, bringing together students across different instruments in a relaxed and supportive environment. However, as it’s their second time performing, it’s an opportunity to step it up a notch.

The purpose of this concert is to help beginners gain more experience with live performance while keeping the atmosphere fun and low-pressure. Teachers should encourage students to see it as a chance to build confidence and refine their performance skills
