Materials Required and Listening Guide
It is very important that your child has three Singing Rascals books and tapes for use at home. This home listening is essential part of the progress.
LPSM has issued a Reading Guide, for parents interested in learning more about how a musical education can benefit the whole child. These lists have no magical properties, nor are they in any way exhaustive, but they may help you get started. Be guided by your child's obvious preferences and use them as a starting point for further exploration.
For the younger child:
Badinerie from Suite No. 2 by Bach
This flute solo is a lovely, happy, rhythmical piece, good for movement.
Clarinet Quintet by Mozart (2nd Movement)
A glorious slow tune which is warm and secure. Very suitable for quiet peaceful moments like bedtime.
Trumpet Concerto in E flat by Haydn
Trumpet playing a smooth yet rhythmical tune. If you want something more lively try the last movement.
'The Swan' from Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens
The Cello is the soloist here; it is one of the most beautiful short pieces for cello. It can usually be found in a cello and piano version as well as the original where the cello is accompanied by the orchestra
Für Elise by Beethoven
Even if you do not recognise the title this melody will be familiar
Serenade from the String Quartet Opus 3 No.5 in F by Haydn
A beautiful violin solo accompanied by pizzicato strings. Again this is a tune you will recognise as soon as you hear it.
Chanson de Matin by Elgar
For violin and piano; quite short.
Humoresque in G flat major Opus 101 by Dvorak
Originally a piano solo, it has been arranged for violin and piano. A happy tune with a catchy rhythm.
Caprice Viennois by Kreisler
Written by one of the most famous violinist of the first half of the last century.
For the Older Child:
'Alla Marcia' from The Karelia Suite by Sibelius
A most catchy rhythmical tune to set the foot tapping.
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart
Any movement of this piece is sure to please.
Overture from Hansel and Gretel by Humperdinck
The opera is based on a story not unlike Babes in the Wood.
Radetzky March by Johann Strauss
Immediately appealing. Great for moving and stamping accompanied with claves or other percussion instruments.
March from The Love of Three Oranges by Prokofiev
Another march but in a modern and very catchy style.
Polonaise in A major Opus 40 No.1 by Chopin
A very exciting piano piece.
Simple Symphony by Benjamin Britten
A short work for string orchestra. Try the "Boisterous Boiree" and the " Playful Pizzicato"
Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg
Every mood is present here. Try 'Morning' for a peaceful tune and 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' for something more lively and exciting.
Clair de Lune from Suite Bergamasque by Debussy
A piano solo creating a mood of peace and tranquility.
Polka from The Bartered Bride by Smetana
An exciting dance full of rhythm to get you dancing.
Fantasia on Greensleeves by Vaughan Williams
A good entry into the more classical use of folk music, based on one of England's best known folk melodies
